In their own words

NI

Nurul Izzah

CafΓ© owner, Shah Alam

"I came in a bit sceptical β€” I have had consultants tell me things I already knew, packaged in language I had to decode. This was different. They spent a morning at the cafΓ©, watched how we work, and the notes they sent me afterward were so specific it was a bit unsettling. In a useful way."

Field Observation β€” May 2025

CL

Christopher Lim

Print shop, Subang Jaya

"I started the Pattern Review because turnover was drifting but I had no clear explanation for why. By week three they had identified a gap in how we were pricing repeat clients. Not dramatic, but it was exactly what was needed. The written summary was clear and I still refer to it now."

Salmah Talib

Alterations business, PJ

"The Notebook Partnership has been running for four months now. What I value most is that they remember everything β€” I do not have to re-explain context every time we meet. They track small things I mention in passing and bring them back when it becomes relevant. It feels like proper attention, not a service."

RH

Rajan Haridas

Hardware supplier, Klang

"Honest without being harsh. That is the right description. The field notes included some things I was not comfortable reading, but they were accurate and they were written carefully. I appreciated that they did not soften things to nothing, but they also did not make me feel stupid for not having seen it myself."

Field Observation β€” March 2025

LM

Lina Mokhtar

Online retail, Puchong

"I was sceptical about the value of an observation session for an online business β€” what is there to see? But they looked at how I was managing orders, how I was spending my hours, what I was prioritising versus what was actually generating income. The session surfaced something I had been avoiding thinking about for months."

WK

Wei Keong

Logistics, Shah Alam

"The Pattern Review flagged an operational bottleneck I had been managing around for so long that I had stopped thinking of it as a problem. Simple observation, clearly written. The price was fair for what was produced β€” two sessions and a summary that I could actually act on."

Three case studies

Field Observation β€” Retail Boutique, Damansara Uptown

The situation

A boutique owner with strong product knowledge was working long hours but felt the business was not moving forward. She could not identify whether the issue was operational, financial, or simply a question of direction.

What we observed

During the observation session, we noted that most of her working hours were spent on tasks that could be delegated or batched β€” and that she had no consistent time set aside for purchasing decisions, which was her area of genuine strength.

The outcome

She restructured her weekly schedule within a month of receiving the field notes. Six months later she described the change as the most useful single shift she had made in three years of trading.

Pattern Review β€” Food Manufacturing, Shah Alam

The situation

A small food producer was experiencing irregular cash flow and had a sense that certain products were dragging down the overall operation, but the picture was muddled by seasonal variation and shared production costs.

What we observed

Over four weeks of observation, two products were consistently absorbing time and materials disproportionate to their contribution. A pricing structure that looked logical on paper was creating cross-subsidisation that was not visible in day-to-day management.

The outcome

One product line was discontinued and a second repriced. Cash flow stabilised within two months. The owner noted that the written pattern summary was useful to revisit three months later when making a related decision about a new product.

Notebook Partnership β€” Services Business, Petaling Jaya

The situation

An owner of a small services firm was navigating a difficult transition: adding a second employee while managing a growing client base. She wanted a thinking partner through the process, not someone to tell her what to do.

How the partnership worked

Monthly sessions tracked the transition over six months. The running notebook captured key decisions, concerns, and small observations between sessions. Quarterly reviews provided a summary of what had changed and what remained unresolved.

The outcome

The second hire worked out well, but more importantly the owner described feeling less alone in her decision-making throughout the period. The written record at the end of the engagement has become a reference document she returns to.
